Endings .... and Beginnings
Modern Organic Fabrics is going out of business. I really love running the shop and all my wonderful customers, but sometimes things don't go as planned. Why am I closing the shop? Certainly NOT because there is no demand for organic cotton fabric. Quite the contrary, really. I think the popularity of organic fabric has led to many online shops carrying it. Meaning increased competition. I also think that it can be difficult for a very small shop to keep going. Modern Organic Fabrics really needed to take the leap and become bigger. Only I don't have the capital for that. So after a very slow November I realized that without the money for a bigger shop with more products I would need to close the shop. I was very sad about it and didn't make the decision easily. As I type this and tell you all about it, time has passed and I'm comfortable with closing the shop and moving on.
There is good news for you, though! The entire shop is on sale for 40% off! Yes, EVERYTHING! While supplies last, of course. Please read the "small print" below:
- 40% off is the final mark down. Prices will not go lower than this. This price reflects my break even point.
- There will no longer be free shipping for any orders. Shipping prices are calculated when you check out. If you overpay by a significant amount for shipping, you will be refunded. If you underpay by a significant amount you will be asked to pay more before your order is shipped.
- The shop will close Saturday, January 15. Any remaining inventory will then be moved to my Etsy shop (http://www.etsy.com/shop/modernorganicfabrics). My etsy shop is currently in Vacation Mode until January 16. So this sale is exclusive to my web shop customers.
- After you scoop up all the goodies you want, I'd appreciate it if you could tell any friends, Facebook/Twitter buddies and/or blog readers you know about the sale to help me move the remaining inventory.
This is not the end of me, though. I'll still be around and will return to blogging. Some of you may remember when I was the voice behind The Fabric Shopper. Well, I love blogging and miss it. I have started a new blog and would love it if you would join me there. It's call A Sewing Journal, and while I have a few posts up to give you an idea of what it's all about, it's still a bit of a work in progress.
Lastly, for those looking for some of the "Coming Soon" fabrics and more, here's a list of some sources for the fabric:
- Birch Fabrics: Circa 60*Beach Mod and Marine: Fabricworm, Lola Pink Fabrics, Pink Chalk Fabrics, Fat Quarter Shop, Fabric Shoppe
- Cloud9 Fabrics: Nature Walk: Hawthorne Threads, Fabricworm
- Daisy Janie: Shades of Grey: See Stockist Page
- Good Luck Elephants: Eden Fabrics
- Monaluna: Annika & Marin: Monaluna, Fabricworm

- Harmony Art: Near Sea Naturals, For 5 yards or more: Stitch Simple
I want to end by saying thank you to all my lovely customers. I really appreciate your business and enthusiasm for organic fabric. I remain a big believer in organic cotton fabric and will continue to sew with it and write about it.

Awww, Melanie . . . I'm so sorry! I know how hard it must have been to make that decision & also understand how hard it is to run an online store and make it profitable! (Been there, done that!) HUGS!
I'm so sorry to hear this. Best of luck with your future endeavors.
Oh, I'm so sorry! I hope the new year brings new opportunities for you.
We love you Melanie! So sorry to see you leaving as you are one of our valued Stockists. Modern Organics will be missed. It is a gem of a shop with its refined and broad selection of all-organic fabrics. It was an honor to be included in your offerings. Gina and I both wish you the best of luck in your new ventures and a very Happy New Year. Thank you so much for being a part of Cloud9's first 2 years and for helping spread the word and value of organic cotton fabrics. xo
As long as you are happy with the decision then we will be happy for you!
So sorry to hear you're closing, but it sounds as if you are at peace w/ the decision, so I wish you the best in all you do...going to check out your new blog!

so sorry to see your store go, but wish you the best with your future endeavors! I look forward to continuing to read your blog.
I sooo understand! Sometime things can be going great and still not be what you need to do. Growing would have meant growing your work at the same time. :)
Have a fabulous new year!
~Kim

Your passion will be missed, Melanie. The focus you brought to organic fabrics was needed and very much appreciated!! Even though Modern Organics will not continue, please know that you made a difference that matters - past, present and future. I count myself amongst those whom you've inspired - can't wait to see what you'll be up to next! "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end." (semisonic)
