Organic Sewing: Show and Tell with Ulrike

strandläufer - front

Meet Ulrike of lieblingsdecke. Today she is going to tell us a little about what she sews with organic cotton fabrics:

Hi, my name is Ulrike and I am the person behind 'lieblingsdecke'. 'lieblingsdecke' is German and means 'favorite blanket' and this is exactly what I aim for: to make quilts which turn out to be someone's favorite cozy blanket.

My first organic quilt is made mainly from fabric of the line 'Beyond the Sea' by Cloud9 fabrics. When I saw this fabric line, I was intrigued by the design - I love the fresh and summery colors and the sandpiper is simply adorable. What I also like about the fabric is that it is super soft to the touch. This and the fact that it is following highest organic standards makes it ideal for a baby blanket.

The quilt I made is called 'Strandlaeufer' (Sandpiper) and it uses a very simple pattern called 'Tumbler', also known as 'Flower Pot'. The middle block is surrounded by a  broad border. For a baby quilt, I generally like using a simple pattern if the fabric has a busy or very distinctive motif. That way the blanket is soothing but not boring and at the same time, the fabric design shows really well.

I enjoy working with organic fabric and hope for a bigger choice in colors and designs in the future. This doesn't only apply to cotton fabric, but also to the choice of organic battings and backside fabrics like flannel.

Thanks for sharing, Ulrike! You can find Ulrike at:

I finally updated my blogroll (find it in the righthand column). Thanks to the commmenters on last week's giveaway, I found sooo many new-to-me blogs. I also added some of my favorites from my own blogreader.

Please hop on over there and see if there are some new-to-you blogs as well. Did I miss a few? Let me know in the comments. I'm particularly looking for sewing and quilting blogs.
